Everyone knows that science and technology are important but many do not clearly understand how they work, and how they can be made to work better for our society and world. I have written a great deal of material on this that I am not at liberty to publish on the Web, or which is of too narrowly technical interest to be very suitable here. But here are a few things of broader interest.

Oil as a Strategic Factor: The supply of oil in the first half of the 21st century, and its strategic implications for the U.S. Jun 2001. Although much has changed in the oil markets since then, almost all of this paper is devoted to fundamental factors which have changed little. In addition to the geological issues it addresses economics and technology, including the technology of alternatives.

Stealth. While revealing no secrets, this brief paper describes the fundamentals of radar stealth clearly and accurately.

Fuel Cells. The fuel cell is the power source of the future -- and has been since its discovery in 1839. This paper describes the fundamentals of how all types of fuel cells work and illuminates some of the obstacles that have taken so long to surmount.
